This presentation outlines the role that e-health plays in pathology, the challenges faced and a way forward.
e-Health is the transfer of health resources and health care by electronic means. This presentation discusses one aspect of e-health – how Laboratory Information Systems communicate pathology information.
A survey of 15 public pathology services was conducted.
Common major challenges and risks surround data integrity and system connectivity and interoperability.
Significant opportunities were identified in improving standardisation and systems rationalisation.
An example of how pathology laboratory information systems could interact with the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record, and the benefits and implications of this was presented.
The role of a national organization in fostering ehealth developments was also discussed.
